Collecting: My Milk Glass Collection

Now before you start thinking about my whole word of the year, “bare”, and the idea of collecting something new, let me just say, having a collection of something you love just adds to your life.  I think it actually helps deter random purchases.  When I go to garage sales and thrift stores I’m specifically on the hunt for milk glass.  I’m less apt to walk out with items that don’t fit in my collection.

How was that for a justification?  Did you buy into it?  Good, because I need to keep practicing that spiel until it sounds convincing to my husband.

I thought I would share some of my favorite milk glass pieces with you today.  It really is such a great thing to collect because (a) white goes with everything, and (b) milk glass is usually priced really really low.  I find pieces at the thrift store for just $2-3.

I have a full service of eight of matching dinner and salad plates.  Now, I’m always looking for unique pieces of different shapes and sizes.  I particularly love the leaf pattern on these bowls and always have my eye out for it.  These two little bowls were the first items in my collection.  They were my mother’s and I always loved them, even as a little girl.

My mother-in-law gifted me this sweet punch bowl with 12 matching cups.  I’ve used it once to serve punch but it also is a great stand alone piece to serve a large salad in.

I’ve slowly been acquiring these small salad bowls with my coveted leaf pattern.  I found four in one day at a local antique mall for $8 and could hardly contain myself until I got to the car.  I’ve found some random pieces in the thrift store and keep bringing them home and adding them to the grouping.

I really love flowers in milk glass.  I love to have fresh flowers in the house in one of my milk glass vases.

I am also a milk glass collector, but do not have near as many pieces as you do. Love the design of the punch bowl and cups. I tend to go for the plainer patterns. Love to look for them at junk & thrift stores.

I, too, buy milk glass when I see a piece at flea markets, yard sales, thrift stores, etc. I do not have a large collection like yours but I do enjoy using my little compotes for desserts, candy, or to display flowers and boxwood balls in, candles on, etc. Love it.

A friend of mine got me hooked on collecting milk glass! I have enough to fill a small store, but who can resist all the beautiful and unique pieces when I’ve found them as low as a quarter at times!! I too am still trying to convince my husband it’s an affordable habit and I love how easy it is to decorate with them and I agree, flowers look beautiful in the vases around the house! Thanks for sharing your love of milk glass collecting.
